Estonia is a former Soviet republic that is now one of the fastest growing economies in the world. This results in a beautiful historic city which maintains its heritage but can afford to invest in modern comforts and preserve its history.
Although we took a quick bus tour around the city, we spent most of our 6 hours in town walking. What follows is essentially our walking tour of Tallinn, Estonia.
Fat Margharet with Oleviste Church in the background ![]()
We stopped by a glass-blowing gallery ![]()
Along the way, we found out where Julie must have gotten her USC tattoo... ![]()
Then we took a trip up to the top of Tallinn where we found the Toompea Castle and the Russian Orthodox Church. ![]()
Then we decided to walk down a very long, very steep walkway to head back into town. ![]()

Passing by the Texas Honky-Tonk Cantina... ![]()
We found a marzipan (or marsipan, in Estonian) shop, which Tallinn is apparently famous for. ![]()
After doing some shopping, we continued on to the Oleviste Church, where Dave rested downstairs and Julie climbed 6.2 million steps (at least that's what it seemed like) to the top. ![]()

We finally returned to the ship after spending about 6 hours walking the town. ![]()
Once again, we were rewarded with magnificent views... ![]()
And we were greeted when we returned for bed by tonight's Towel Princess. ![]()
Before the cruise, we were sure that Russia would be the highlight of the trip. Perhaps because we had the freedom to explore on our own, or possibly because of how beautiful the city is, we were very surprised to find that Tallinn quickly became our favorite city to visit on this trip.
